Congratulations to the following girls who are our captains for 2012:

Medics:

As you know, we have had some serious injuries this year on the hockey field.  Not only did some of the boys end up in hospital, but our girls also had their share of injuries.  Mr Kenyon and Mrs Meikle have agreed to assist in payment for proper medics at all of our hockey matches.  Thank you to the BHA and Beaulieu College for this.

Saturday 26 May - Dainfern

We are considering playing our hockey fixtures against Dainfern (scheduled for Saturday the 26th) on Friday afternoon/evening the 25th.  Please let me know what you think about separating our Derbies into Hockey Fridays and Rugby/Netball Saturdays?  Your opinions will assist Mike, Ally, Trevor and I with our future decisions and arrangements.  We are hoping this may allow more support for all codes on their respective days.

Support

Once again please may I remind you that all Juniors and 2nd team players are expected to stay and support the 1st team and the other teams playing after them.  I have been disappointed in the number of girls leaving early.  On derby days especially it is expected that all hockey players stay and support both boys and girls 1st teams for hockey and that they remain behind or return the next day to support the Rugby and Netball teams.  Please may I ask all parents for their assistance in this regard so that girls hockey can truly lead by example in terms of school spirit!

Once again your support is truly valued and I believe that hockey does have the best parents!

Stanford Lake

We are still desperately in need of accommodation for the players from Stanford Lake.  If any of the parents can help with this, please contact me or Mr Kenyon.  Help will be appreciated.

Boys Hockey - Hyde Park and Stanford

Dear Hockey Parents

Many thanks to all of you who supported our teams in Aitken and Boden this weekend.  I know it was not always easy having to travel and drop-off and collect at far places and awkward times!  I am very proud of the boys who took part in the competition, our coaches for their expertise and our parents for their constant encouragement!  We achieved some good results of which we can be proud  and suffered a few agonising defeats which will motivate all the teams to work harder I am sure!

RESULTS

Aitken

Pool game 1- Maragon:  lost 3-1

Pool game 2 - Benoni:  won 8-0

Pool game 3 - Bryanston:  drew 0-0

Qualified for the Quarter-finals as the runner-up.

QF – St Dunstans won 2-0

SF – Florida won 3-1

Final – Maragon lost 3-1

Well done to all the boys who played with great skill and discipline and were unfortunate to lose in the final!  As the runner-up in the Aitken B Section we will now play the 15th placed team in the A-section in a promotion/relegation play-off to try and qualify for Aitken A-section.  This is against St Peter's at a still to be arranged date and time.  This is an excellent result considering it was our first year in the B-section after being promoted last year!

Boden

Pool game 1 – Bryanston:  lost 1-0

Pool game 2 – Hyde Park:  lost 3-2

Pool game 3 – Maragon:  lost 3-0

Finished 4th in the group.

Play-off 1 (9th – 16th) - 1-1 (lost on penalties)

Play off 2 (13th-16th) - Mondeor  Won 4-0

Play-off 3 (13th/14th) - Linden      Won 3-0

This was a good start for our U15s who had some close results and could have ended very differently!
Bryanston ended up winning the Boden B Section and Hyde Park finished 3rd so we were in a very tough group.  I wish to express  my appreciation to my colleagues Mr Naidoo, Mrs Janse van Rensburg and Mrs Trenor for their
assistance with the U15 team over the weekend.

FIXTURES

Once again please may I remind you that all U15s and 2nd team players are expected to stay until the 1st team and the other teams playing after them have played.  I have been disappointed in the number of boys leaving early.  On derby days especially it is expected that all hockey players stay and support both boys and girls 1st teams for hockey and that they remain behind or return the next day to support the Rugby and Netball teams.  Please may I ask all parents for their assistance in this regard so that boys' hockey can truly lead by example in terms of school spirit!

Once again your support is truly valued and I believe that hockey does have the best parents.  I am especially grateful to my first team parents who organised Bacon and Egg rolls and Prego Rolls for the squad during the recent Aitken.   The jealousy from the other teams was obvious and the spirit this created in our squad was excellent!

BEAULIEU COLLEGE – FINAL NEWSLETTER “EVER”

Dear parents,

You will agree that communication between the College and parents is absolutely vital.

You will also have realised that some time has passed since you last received a newsletter from us.  Readership levels were found to be extremely low, causing the decision to move away from e-mail-based newsletters and to rather share “Latest News”, “Announcements and Notices” and an “Exec Blog” directly on the website. This news will be published as it happens and will provide a real-time view of Beaulieu College and its pupils.

Should you wish to keep up to date with news as it is published, we invite you to subscribe using one of several options, including having the news e-mailed to you as it happens:

  • Access www.beaulieucollege.co.za
  • Click on the orange “Subscribe to our News” button on the right-hand side
  • Select your preferred option.

Chess - 10 May 2012

On Thursday 10th May Beaulieu College played their 1st match in the Gauteng South Schools League. We beat Summit College 5 games to 3.

Well done to Sean Solomon, Fabian Marsden, Muzi Nkosi, Khanye Nene and Kwanda Bengu who won their matches. Justin Pile also did the team proud! Well done all.

From the Head's Desk - 11 May 2012

DanielleMeikleThe busyness of the second term always seems to catch us slightly unaware. It has been a whirlwind of activity since we returned to school last week and it seems a lot longer than 10 days ago that the term began. As I write this the pupils are visiting the various exhibitors stalls at our career expo and there is a lot of activity in the hall. Many of them have garnered valuable information about their future studies and Mrs Sanders has once again pulled together a well organised event which has caused minimal disruption to the academic day. I would like to thank her for her efforts.

New terms bring new staff and we are proud to announce the arrival of Mrs Felicity Herd, who will be teaching Life Sciences in Mrs Engelbrecht’s post for the remainder of 2012. Mrs Herd has a wealth of experience and knowledge and will no doubt maintain the high standards set by her predecessor. Mr Fazul Khan has also joined our staff compliment in the Mathematics and IT Departments. Mr Khan taught previously at Sacred Heart and Wykeham Collegiate and is excited to bring his immense skill set to bear on the pupils at Beaulieu College.

Mr Doug Gilmour has been appointed as the new groundsman and caretaker of the College. Doug will take over from Mr Terry Maguire, who after years of dedication and service, retires at the end of this month. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Maguire for all he has done over the past 8 years. The College he was appointed to take care of in 2004 has certainly grown and transformed under his care into the outstanding set of facilities it is today.

Our pupils have once again excelled in various individual pursuits over the last month. Lexi Stais competed in the MG Events Springdays Jumping Show in Lastrup, Germany winning the 1,35m competition and placing 4th in the 1,25m class. She then competed in vaulting in the Netherlands where she finished a remarkable 3rd in a field of 37 international competitors.

Trent Hooper represented the SA U19 Polo Cross team which was victorious at the annual tournament held last weekend. Trent was awarded Player of the Tournament following his outstanding performance at the event.

Cailin Fensham and Tanya Chelin placed first and third repectively in the 1.3m championship class at the recent 2012 Youth Festival held at Kyalami Equestrian Park. Cailin Fensham has also been showcasing her Netball talent – with selection to the district U16 team which attends Gauteng trials on Friday 11 May. We wish her best of luck at this exceptionally tough level of competition.

Dain Ongers has been selected to the Gauteng U16 and to the National U16 Indoor/Action Cricket sides. Dane will act as wicketkeeper for the SA team when they compete in the Junior World Cup to be held in October 2012.

Eric Wowor competed for Central Gauteng in the SA Boys U15 Golf Championship in Somerset West last week. The Central Gauteng team won the tournament with Eric finishing as the runner up in the U14 category and 9th out of 116 players in the U15 age group.

We are so exceptionally proud of all of you.

Our winter sport teams continue competing at the highest levels. The rugby boys and hockey girls returned from their tour to Treverton with valuable experience and some worthy wins under the belts. The hockey boys are competing today and over the course of the weekend in the Boden and Aitken Competitions filled with confidence after their 12-0 victory over Heronbridge. Our boys squash team is well into their season playing with great tenacity and fighting spirit. Mr Brouard singled out the performance of Dmitri Vlachos who came from two games behind to win his last match. Our rugby and netball players face off against St Dunstan’s in our Derby Day this Saturday. I hope for a spirited performance from all of the teams.

On the academic front a record number of pupils qualified for the second round of the Maths Olympiad to be written later this month. It seems that the introduction of the Accelerated Maths course in gr 8 and 9 is already paying off for our top mathematicians! Well done to all who participated in round 1 and best of luck to the pupils who move forward to tackle the greater challenge of round 2.

Our best wishes must also go with Carly Twaddle who will be flying the Beaulieu College flag at the prestigious Young Historians Competition held in Sandton next week. I have every confidence that she will do us proud.

Lastly please could I appeal to you all to support Interact in the drive to collect blankets for the less fortunate in our community. We have been so lucky to have the warm weather hold for the first fortnight of May but I am certain that winter is just around the corner and when it hits it is going to hard!

Cailin Fensham features in the Sandton Chronical

An extract from the Sandton Chronical which featured a lovely picture of Cailin on her horse Rumoroso. “The 2012 youth festival at Kyalami Equestrian Park culminated in a contentious jump off between eight junior riders in the 1.3m championship class. Cailin Fensham riding Rumoroso jumped into the lead with a precise ride and a quick time which the other competitors could not beat. Cinzia Pasteris (Lakea) was a close second with Tanya Chelin (Alzu Orinoko), Also a Beaulieu College pupil, in third place.” Congratulations!
